How to Get Your Vehicle Ready for Fall

November 12, 2020 Published by Leave your thoughts

We’re already well into the fall, but if you’ve been putting off your vehicle maintenance, there’s no better time than now to do some seasonal checks and fixes! This is especially important as the winter begins to draw closer and cooler weather starts to come along with it.

Here’s a quick overview of some of the most important pieces of car maintenance you should perform every fall in Lubbock, TX:

  • Simple cleanup and preparations: Think about the steps you take around your home when fall arrives. You probably swap out seasonal clothes and decorations to be prepared for the next several months. It only makes sense to do similar things with your vehicle. Clean out the interior of your vehicle, throwing out all trash and vacuuming out all the seating areas. Give it a good wash and a fresh wax, clean the tires and get it ready for a new season, giving you a head start on cleanliness before winter.
  • Windshield wipers: You should replace your windshield wipers every six to 12 months, and the changing of the seasons is an ideal time to handle this task. Over time, your wipers will degrade and become less effective at cleaning off your windshield, leaving streaks behind or making unpleasant noises while operating. Changing your wipers gives you a clear windshield, which is safer for use especially during the November rains.
  • Tires: It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on your tires, and performing a more thorough inspection with the changing of the seasons is a sensible route to take. Check the treads of your tires to make sure they’re still giving you enough traction. They should be at least 1/8 inch deep. If you notice the tire tread falls below that level, it’s time to consider investing in new tires. If you plan on swapping your tires out for winter tires, now’s a good time for you to go shopping if you don’t already have winter tires that you’re prepared to put on. Make sure any tires you choose will be suitable for your specific vehicle.
  • Battery: The changing of the seasons is also a smart time for you to do some general inspection of your battery. Check all the terminals and cables to make sure they’re sufficiently tight, and make any adjustments needed. You should also carefully inspect the exterior of the battery for any signs of wear, corrosion or debris, and perform any cleaning you can. If you believe it’s getting close to replacement time, it’s in your best interest to make the replacement now rather than hoping you’ll be able to make it through the winter—you don’t want to find yourself stranded on a cold winter day because your battery died when you should have replaced it a couple months back.
